Earlier in November, I was approached by Simply Earth to review their upcoming essential oil recipe box for the month of December. As someone who has been using essential oils from random brands I find in Winners or Marshalls and wanting to use more, I figured, why not give them a try! Anything that can help me out with my bouts of colds and coughs, helps me in my path of persistently living, plus smells seasonally wonderful for the Christmas holidays, is right up my alley. But let’s start with the basics: What is Simply Earth?
I think their slogan says it all: Essential Oils With A Purpose!
Simply Earth is not a MLM (multi level marketing) company that’s trying to sell essential oils, with numerous reps that build teams to make money. Instead, they’re an essential oils company that believes in essential oils that are natural, ideal for you and your home, and can be purchased directly from the company at low prices.
Unlike other brands, they focus on quality, ethics and making 100% pure essential oils. Each oil is made with ethics and growing potential in mind, with each plant used being harvested fairly and safely.
The Simply Earth company started when the founders did not want to use chemical laden products to treat stinky feet. Since then, the company has come a long way and now offers essential oils, essential oil accessories, jewellery, and essential oil recipe boxes! Something extra admirable about the company, is that they also donate 13% of each sale towards causes to end human trafficking. Why 13%? It’s because 13 is the average age where children are sold into the industry.

One thing to note: Essential oils of any kind are not regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) because they shouldn’t be used as a singular effective treatment or cure for diseases or sicknesses. Simply Earth has this disclosure on their website and doesn’t push their products as a way to treat illness. But because essential oils aren’t regulated in the same way that other cosmetics or drugs are, it’s important to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS on intended use and how much of each oil to use. Additionally, if you are looking for GC/MS (Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry )reports for each essential oil, you can find it on the website’s detail page for the bottle.
Why Do I Use Essential Oils?
While they aren’t medically proved to cure illnesses, essential oils historically and presently have some benefits. Take for example, Lavender. If you’ve ever needed to relax, you may have heard drinking Lavender tea will help. But Lavender essential oil also has the same type of effect.
I like to think of essential oils as a booster to the other ways I keep my body and mind healthy. I make sure to medically check things out, but I use essential oils a little extra. I’ve used essential oils before for headaches, energy boosts and relaxation. Scent and natural properties play a larger role in how our minds and bodies work than one would think!
Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box for December
Simply Earth kindly sent me one of their Essential Oil Recipe Boxes to try out. Their Recipe Boxes are a monthly subscription box of essential oils and recipe cards for you to use. The Essential Oil Recipe boxes come with 4 essential oils, 6 recipe cards, and the tools/equipment you need to create them. Now, one thing I will say is that some of the recipes require additional items that aren’t included in the box, but they are pretty standard items like Epsom salts or Baking Soda. And to be honest, that’s my only criticism of the box!
To get 4 essential oils for under $50 CDN is a great deal, especially when they’re expensive elsewhere from other companies. Plus, the four oils tend to be chosen to work well together in blends which gives them multiple uses.

- Almond Oil (100% Pure Carrier Oil, 118 mL)
- Coconut Oil (Fractionated 118mL)
- Coconut Oil (Solid, 6 ounces)
- Beeswax pellets (2 ounces)
- 1 large glass jar
- 6 amber glass roller bottles (so you can roll on your essential oils)
- 6 amber glass bottles (use these if you create a blend to store)
If you haven’t heard of Carrier oils before, neither had I! They’re actually the oils you need to mix with drops of essential oil to safely apply them to your body.
Getting the BONUS BOX with the December Essential Oil Recipe Box made my life a lot easier because I don’t really don’t own any accessories to for Essential Oil DIYs. Of course, once you own these bonus items, you’ll be set for the next few months. Not bad for the price you’re paying! I believe these BONUS BOXES come out every few boxes so you can stock up on some of the accessories you may not have or need more of.
Testing Out Some Essential Oil December Recipes
Vanilla Mint Lip Scrub DIY
One of the December Essential Oil Recipe cards that jumped out at me, is the Vanilla Mint Lip Scrub. It only had 2 steps in the process, which made it a no-brainer for a first time essential oil DIYer to try.
For Canadians especially, lips can get ultra chapped in the winter months because of the dryness and the cold weather. Lip exfoliation is key! That’s why you need a good lip scrub. This recipe card only need a few extra items that most people have around their house: brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract and a small mixing bowl.
The recipe takes a few minutes to make (you mix the ingredients on the card together) and is super simple to scoop into the small container. Plus, I got to cut out a fancy sticker to put on the top as a label. The one downside to the labels is that they don’t just peel off their backing paper–you actually need to cut the labels out and look for little slits in the back of the paper to peel.
And of course, after making the scrub, I tried it! The scrub is actually quite gentle in comparison to others I’ve tried before (looking at you here, Lush) and leaves your lips with a minty fresh scent.
Congestion Support Roll On
This was the other very basic, dummies-can-do-it, recipe from the December box. All it needed was the Almond carrier oil, Peppermint essential oil, Breathe Easy essential oil blend, and the 10ml roller bottle.
All I did was pop in a few drops of the essential oils (as directed on the card) and poured in the Almond carrier oil. That’s it! And of course, you can add the fancy Christmas sticker to the bottle to know what blend you’ve created. This product is great for helping with nasal congestion, but also can help relieve headaches.
